About Oort
OORT is a Web3 data infrastructure project focused on decentralized storage and AI data collection. Its core product, OORT DataHub, allows users to contribute data for AI training and earn rewards, while OORT Edge (Deimos device) provides a plug-and-play node for decentralized storage and computing. The Olympus protocol serves as its Layer 1 blockchain, using a patented Proof of Honesty (PoH) consensus to ensure network reliability.
Its main competitive edge lies in combining storage and AI data services in one ecosystem, with a low-barrier entry for individual participants. The market pain point it addresses is the centralization of cloud storage and AI training data, which raises concerns about data privacy, ownership, and single-point failures. OORT aims to give users control over their data while enabling businesses to access diverse, verifiable datasets.
In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-29), OORT has focused on ecosystem integration and product refinement. Notably, OORT DataHub was integrated into Binance Wallet, allowing millions of users to participate in data contribution. The Deimos II device was introduced as an upgraded plug-and-play edge node. The project also announced a partnership with Shenzhen Data Exchange to promote cross-border data circulation. Development activity on GitHub continued, with updates to the Olympus protocol and related tools.
OORT was founded in 2018 by Columbia University professor Max Li, originating from the pain point that his students could hardly afford traditional cloud services to train AI agents. The project initially explored using blockchain as an incentive layer to connect underutilized global nodes. During 2020-2021, the team focused on R&D of core technologies such as storage and computing, launching the decentralized storage node Edge Device, laying the foundation for its infrastructure.
In 2022, OORT began commercialization, building a data marketplace, decentralized cloud services, and customized enterprise solutions, forming a revenue loop. In January 2024, OORT completed a $10 million funding round with investors including Taisu Ventures, supported by Microsoft and Google, fueling token listing and product development.
In December 2024, the OORT DataHub commercial version officially launched, revolutionizing AI data collection and annotation in a decentralized manner. It was later integrated into Binance Wallet, reaching hundreds of millions of users, and connected with multiple leading global data exchanges, enabling a closed loop for real-world data trading. Regarding token economics, OORT updated its model by locking 800 million tokens for five years and extending the team unlock period, reinforcing its long-term ecosystem commitment. Together, these milestones outline OORT's evolution from solving AI data bottlenecks to building a DeAI ecosystem where everyone contributes and benefits.
OORT's core leadership includes:
Max Li (Founder & CEO): Adjunct Professor at Columbia University, former Qualcomm research engineer with 200+ patents. Founded OORT in 2021 to build decentralized AI data infrastructure.
Michael A. Robinson (CEO Office Member & OORT Foundation Chairman): Leads ecosystem strategy and partnerships. Also Co-Chairman of HumanAIx, with venture capital background in Web3 and AI.
