About Moonwell
Moonwell is a decentralized lending protocol built on Base and Ethereum. Users can supply digital assets to earn interest or collateralize them to borrow, with no monthly payments or extra fees. Its core narrative is "lending made simple", using smart contracts to match borrowers and lenders, while community governance adjusts parameters.
While addressing pain points such as complex processes and high barriers in traditional finance, Moonwell also faces oracle and liquidity risks. The official website emphasizes audits and bug bounties, yet exploits still occurred in the past six months.
On August 27, 2026, an attacker manipulated the oracle of the low-liquidity MAMO token to inflate its collateral price, borrowing cbBTC, USDC, wstETH, ETH and other assets from Base, then swapping them into DAI, causing a loss of about $8.7 million. Moonwell subsequently set the borrow cap of all core Base markets to 1 wei and limited MAMO and WELL supply. In addition, roughly $1.8 million bad debt inherited from the February cbETH oracle error remains unresolved; the August allocation did not arrange repayment, leaving cbETH suppliers facing withdrawal difficulties.
Moonwell, a lending protocol built on Base and Optimism, has experienced several pivotal events since its inception.
In 2022, Moonwell was founded, initially deploying on the Moonbeam and Moonriver networks as part of the Polkadot ecosystem.
A major turning point occurred on October 10, 2025, when the protocol suffered a significant attack on the Base chain, resulting in losses exceeding $4 million in cbBTC. This incident highlighted vulnerabilities in cross-chain operations and oracle dependencies.
Shortly after, in November 2025, Moonwell faced a governance attack where an unknown attacker spent approximately $1,800 to acquire about 40 million MFAM tokens, attempting to transfer control of core contracts and extract around $1.08 million in user funds. The community ultimately thwarted the attack through emergency measures.
In February 2026, an oracle configuration error led to approximately $1.78 million in bad debt, as the cbETH price was incorrectly calculated without multiplying by the ETH/USD rate. This event underscored the critical importance of precise oracle configurations in lending protocols.
On the positive side, Coinbase listed Moonwell's token (WELL) in 2025, marking a significant milestone for market accessibility and legitimacy. Additionally, Coinbase International announced plans to launch perpetual contracts for WELL, further integrating the token into mainstream trading platforms.
These events collectively shaped Moonwell's trajectory, emphasizing the ongoing challenges and evolution of DeFi lending protocols in terms of security, governance, and market adoption.
Negative factors:
The Moonbeam protocol was shut down on July 31, forcing WELL migration to Base and creating exit pressure and sell-off risk.
The August 27 MAMO incident involved oracle price manipulation, leaving ~$9.1M in bad debt and limiting supplier withdrawals.
In August, the cbETH market faced a ~$1.8M net shortfall due to a February oracle error, with zero reserves allocated for repayment.
In September, the MIP-X66 proposal entered voting; it projects an ~85% reduction in monthly bad-debt interest, but cash recovery and supplier compensation remain uncertain.
