About Luno

Luno, founded in 2013 by Marcus Swanepoel and Timothy Stranex, is a cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in London with regional hubs in Singapore and Cape Town. It received early backing from Digital Currency Group (DCG) in 2014, followed by investments from Balderton Capital and Venturra Capital. In 2020, DCG fully acquired Luno, making it an independent subsidiary, while the company expanded across Africa, Asia, and Europe, surpassing 15 million customers in over 40 countries. A notable operational milestone occurred in late 2025 when Luno processed significant Bitcoin inflows from anonymous addresses, highlighting its role in major crypto transfers. However, the company also faced restructuring, announcing a 20% staff reduction as part of strategic adjustments to navigate market conditions.

Key progress for Luno in the past six months:

  1. Bermuda digital asset licence: Luno International received a Class F DAB licence from the BMA, enabling regulated OTC trading (including tokenised stocks, commodities and ZARU stablecoin), global spot markets and wallet custody, supporting institutional and B2B business lines.

  2. Strategic contraction and restructuring: In July, Luno cut 20% of its workforce and reorganised into three divisions — consumer platform and B2B API, emerging-market stablecoin solutions (ZARU), and institutional OTC and cross-border settlements; it also exited non-core markets, ceasing services in some regions from 1 September, focusing on Africa and Southeast Asia.

  3. Instant stablecoin minting: In September, Luno partnered with Meridian to offer corporate clients instant minting of stablecoins (USDC/USDT) upon dollar settlement, launching first in South Africa with plans to expand to Southeast Asia.

Future focus: Concentrate on core markets in Africa and Southeast Asia, leverage the Bermuda licence to scale institutional and B2B services (e.g. Crypto-as-a-Service, global settlements), and continue investing in compliance and stablecoin infrastructure.
