About Lens Protocol
Lens Protocol is a decentralized social network built on blockchain. Users own their social identity, follow relationships, and content as NFT-based on-chain data, which can be carried across different applications. Its V3 version migrated to a dedicated blockchain called Lens Chain, built with ZKsync technology and using the GHO stablecoin for gas, reducing the cost of actions like posting to extremely low levels. Its core strength lies in a portable social graph plus a programmable rules engine, allowing developers to customize follow, posting, and monetization logic while building diverse apps on the same account system — like an open social operating layer.
The pain point it addresses is that traditional social platforms lock user data in closed silos, while earlier blockchain social attempts suffered from high transaction fees and poor user experience. Lens solves data ownership and developer flexibility through on-chain accounts and modular primitives. Yet it has also struggled with user growth: many accounts are inactive, weekly active users are only around 45,000, daily active users around 22,000, and new registrations in January 2026 were just about 1,492. During the past half-year (March to September 2026), the most significant change was the transfer of Lens project management rights to Mask Network, followed by integration with Mask products such as Firefly and Web3.bio. Firefly allows users to post simultaneously to X, Lens, Farcaster, and other platforms, potentially bridging Web2 users into Lens. Meanwhile, rule-engine-based applications like paid subscriptions, gated communities, and on-chain long-form content continue to emerge, making Lens less of a "decentralized Twitter" and more of an operating system for social apps. Whether it can break out of the small crypto-native circle remains to be seen.
Avara completed a $31 million financing round for Lens Protocol, led by Lightspeed Faction, providing critical capital support for its long-term development.
Lens Chain mainnet officially launched, establishing a dedicated social media development network with milestone significance.
Mask Network announced its takeover of Lens Protocol, driving deeper integration and evolution of the decentralized social ecosystem.
Over the past six months, Lens has undergone a major governance transition: Mask Network officially took over the consumer-facing side, while Lens Labs continues maintaining the protocol layer, with the transfer nearly complete. In an AMA, the team outlined the roadmap: first, fix core UX issues—extending login sessions to mainstream social standards and optimizing large multimedia storage; second, broadly integrate wallets and improve cross-app experiences; third, drive growth through use cases like prediction-market comment layers. On the technical front, Lens Chain remains aligned with a multi-chain EVM strategy, with no near-term zkSync stack upgrade or smart-contract changes. EthCC showcased progress on AI spam mitigation and optimizations related to EIP-4844. Regarding governance, the plan is to move forward non-speculatively—for example, weighting votes based on Lens handle behavior—while a tradable token is not a priority. The protocol license may also shift toward MIT/GPL.
