About Hivemapper
Hivemapper is a decentralized mapping network built on Solana. It uses dashcams installed by everyday drivers to collect street-level imagery, rewarding contributors with HONEY tokens. Developers burn HONEY to access the map data, creating a sustainable data marketplace.
Its core strength lies in its crowdsourced model, which solves the high cost and slow update cycles of traditional map-making. By leveraging drivers already on the road, Hivemapper achieves fresher and more cost-effective map coverage than centralized competitors.
In the past six months, Hivemapper has expanded its enterprise customer base, including partnerships with major mapping and mobility companies like HERE, TomTom, and Lyft. It also secured a collaboration with Volkswagen's autonomous driving unit, ADMT, to supply real-time map data for robotaxi operations, highlighting its growing role in the autonomous vehicle ecosystem.
However, the project faces significant challenges. Its revenue is heavily concentrated in a few large contracts, particularly with Volkswagen, creating dependency risks. Additionally, its hardware is primarily sourced from a single manufacturer, which could lead to supply chain bottlenecks. Privacy concerns regarding the handling of personal data in collected imagery also remain a continuous legal and technical hurdle.
Co-founders and core executives:
Ariel Seidman (Co-founder & CEO): Previously Director of Product Management at Yahoo!, founder & CEO of Gigwalk. Founded Hivemapper in 2015.
Evan Moss (Co-founder & CTO): Previously Senior Software Engineer at Deepfield, staff engineer at Scale AI. Co-founded Hivemapper, leading technology development.
Hivemapper recently saw a key team change: co-founder and CTO Evan Moss departed in August 2026. He had held the role since March 2021 and was instrumental in shaping the company's core technology vision. His exit could significantly impact the company's technical strategy, though no successor or follow-up plans have been announced yet.
