Report: Bitcoin's annual electricity consumption reaches 138 TWh, with 52.4% coming from sustainable energy

ChainCatcher news, the latest "Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report 2025" shows that Bitcoin's estimated annual electricity consumption is 138 TWh, resulting in approximately 39.8 Mt of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.

The report points out that currently, 52.4% of Bitcoin mining energy comes from sustainable sources such as renewable energy and nuclear power. In contrast, Ethereum, after completing the "Merge" upgrade in September 2022, reduced its energy consumption by about 99.9% by transitioning from a proof-of-work (PoW) to a proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism. Experts indicate that the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining extends beyond mere electricity consumption, encompassing multiple dimensions such as carbon emissions, water resource consumption, land use, and electronic waste. As policy pressures increase, governments are paying more attention to the type of energy used for mining, its location, and its external impacts.
