About Ronin
Ronin is an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain built by Sky Mavis, originally as a sidechain to support Axie Infinity. It focuses on gaming, offering fast and low-cost transactions. Key components include Katana DEX, Mavis Market NFT marketplace, and sponsored transactions that let games pay gas fees for players, enabling users to trade, earn, and upgrade without holding crypto.
Its core narrative is "player-owned economies" and a "Proof of Distribution" model, which rewards developers and users based on on-chain activity (like gas consumed and transaction volume) rather than passive staking. This incentivizes active participation and building, aiming to become the main entry point for mainstream gamers into Web3.
Market pain points Ronin addresses: high Ethereum gas fees and slow confirmation times made gaming impractical; complex wallet setups and gas management scared away traditional gamers. Ronin solves these with near-zero fees, 3-second blocks, and a built-in wallet with social login and cloud backup.
In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-29), Ronin completed its mainnet migration to an Ethereum Layer 2 using OP Stack for execution and EigenDA for data availability (announced around May 12, 2026). This transition cut annual inflation from over 20% to under 1%. The Saigon testnet migration was also completed. However, in 2022, Ronin suffered a $625 million bridge hack, which remains a trust concern. Despite this, the network has continued to grow, with games like Pixels migrating and seeing significant daily active user increases.
