About IOTA
IOTA, a distributed ledger built for the Internet of Things, has evolved through several key milestones since its founding in 2015. Its initial Tangle architecture eliminated transaction fees, enabling micro-transactions and IoT applications.
In 2023, the ShimmerEVM launch introduced Ethereum-compatible smart contracts to the ecosystem, followed by the Stardust upgrade in late 2024, which enabled native tokenization and NFTs on Layer 1. The Rebased mainnet upgrade in May 2025 marked a significant technical shift, adopting a Move-based smart contract layer while maintaining EVM compatibility, achieving 50,000+ TPS with sub-second finality.
Beyond technical development, IOTA's real-world adoption gained momentum. The TWIN platform, built on IOTA, digitizes trade documentation across Africa and Europe, reducing border clearance times from weeks to hours. The Salus trade finance solution addresses the $2.5 trillion trade finance gap. In 2025, BitGo's support for the IOTA mainnet provided institutional-grade custody, enhancing credibility and accessibility.
The $10 million developer grant program and the establishment of a regulated foundation in Abu Dhabi with $100 million in IOTA tokens further strengthened ecosystem growth. These milestones—from technical upgrades to institutional adoption and real-world applications—position IOTA as a scalable, compliant DLT for global trade and IoT, moving beyond experimental phases into production-ready infrastructure.
