About Farcaster

Farcaster is an open social protocol where accounts are identified by FID, identity and key registries live on OP Mainnet, and messages are ordered by Snapchain, live since April 2025. It addresses social data locked inside a single platform and graphs developers cannot reuse: every message is an Ed25519-signed protobuf, sharded and ordered per FID, consensus runs Malachite BFT, and messages merge as CRDTs, so different clients can build different products on one follow graph. Storage is rented per FID and prepaid by the year, which curbs bulk registration and farming.

The client layer includes Mini Apps (formerly Frames), Sign In with Farcaster and the Warpcast app; Mini Apps distribute applications through posts, with users entering under an existing identity and wallet and skipping downloads and sign-ups. The spec and Hub implementation stay open source, third parties can run indexers, and teams such as Neynar provide read-write APIs and ranking. After Neynar took over protocol development in January 2026, the validator set and reference implementation sit with one team, so decentralisation shows up more in data portability than in distributed ordering power.

Updated: Oct 30, 2026

On October 15, 2026 Farcaster was acquired by Network School, the project founded by Balaji Srinivasan, its third owner in nine months. Merkle and then Neynar had both walked away, with monthly actives below 250,000 and daily actives under 60,000.

Farcaster's new owner plans to rename the protocol Network State Protocol and require every user to accept or reject a social smart contract: those who accept mint an on-chain NFT as proof, while those who refuse keep read-only access and have keys, funds and follows migrated to other clients. Supporting rules borrow from Singapore's public conduct code, listing digital felonies and adding AI-assisted moderation plus proof of humanity. Snapchain still runs at roughly 10,000 TPS with 780-millisecond confirmation, but the application layer was long monopolised by one client, which is why the protocol could be sold at all.

Farcaster will wire the social graph into the network state's identity and governance system, use NFT credentials to separate member rights, and hold developers and clients through the migration window.
