About Monero

Monero (XMR) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that keeps senders, receivers, and amounts confidential by default. Its core business is providing truly fungible digital cash through technologies like stealth addresses, RingCT, and ring signatures. The main pain point it solves is Bitcoin's pseudo-anonymity, where all transactions are publicly traceable, exposing users to surveillance and financial profiling. Monero's competitive edge lies in its default privacy for all users, its ASIC-resistant RandomX mining algorithm that keeps mining accessible on consumer CPUs, and its dynamic block size for scalability. Over the past six months (March to September 2026), Monero has shown resilience amid regulatory pressure. In August 2026, XMR surged about 40%, with market cap nearing $10 billion, driven by cross-chain DEX integrations like Thorchain providing permissionless liquidity. The network is advancing toward FCMP++ upgrades, which will replace fixed-size ring signatures with an efficient proving system using the entire ledger as the anonymity set, alongside Cuprate Rust node implementations for faster sync. However, regulatory headwinds persist: the EU's DAC8 directive and US IRS Form 1099-DA rules caused a sharp correction from January's $720 high to a $315-325 support range in February, before the August recovery. OECD's CARF framework, effective 2026, adds further scrutiny on anonymity-enhancing features. Despite these challenges, Monero remains the only truly fungible digital asset, with its tail emission ensuring sustained mining incentives.

Monero has faced repeated network attacks, including a suspected successful 51% attack by Qubic and multiple block reorganizations that highlighted vulnerabilities in its consensus mechanism.

In response, the Fluorine Fermi update was released to mitigate malicious node threats and strengthen network integrity.

The shutdown of LocalMonero marked a significant shift, reducing decentralized P2P trading options while the network demonstrated resilience through sustained activity despite major exchange delistings.
