About Maple Finance

Maple Finance is an on-chain institutional capital market connecting vetted institutional borrowers with lenders through delegated pools. Its core business: lenders deposit stablecoins into isolated pools managed by pool delegates (specialized underwriters); borrowers borrow from these pools against overcollateralized positions (typically 125%-150%). The protocol earns fees, while MPL token holders govern parameters and pool listings.

Core competitiveness lies in bridging traditional credit expertise with DeFi transparency. Unlike permissionless lending protocols relying purely on algorithmic liquidation, Maple combines professional underwriting with on-chain collateralization, enabling larger, uncollateralized or undercollateralized loans for institutions while maintaining transparency through proof-of-reserves attestations.

Market pain points addressed: (1) DeFi lending lacks institutional-grade credit assessment, limiting loan sizes; (2) traditional finance credit intermediation is slow and opaque; (3) institutional borrowers need capital efficiency beyond simple overcollateralization.

Recent developments (2026-03 to 2026-09): In May 2026, Maple launched separate proof-of-reserves programs for syrupUSDC and syrupUSDT vaults via The Network Firm. Also in May, Maple reached a full settlement with Core Foundation regarding arbitration and Cayman court proceedings, allowing its planned syrupBTC Bitcoin yield product to proceed. In Q3 2026, syrupUSDG launched on Robinhood Chain, reaching $200M AUM within 8 days. Total AUM grew 81% year-over-year to $4.82B.

Negative information within two years: Maple experienced a $50M loss in 2022 during the undercollateralized lending era (Maple V1), which led to the current overcollateralized model. The protocol faces risks including liquidity mismatch (rapid withdrawals forcing deleveraging), counterparty concentration, attestation limitations (not full audits), regulatory friction, governance inertia, and correlation risk during market-wide crypto drawdowns.

Maple Finance, launched in 2019, initially focused on undercollateralized loans for institutional borrowers. In 2022, after the Terra collapse and 3AC bankruptcy, the platform faced a severe crisis with defaults exceeding 5%, forcing a strategic pivot. In 2023, Maple introduced overcollateralization (150%) and tri-party agreements, restoring trust. A significant legal milestone occurred in 2023 when the Cayman court supported the Core Foundation's injunction request against Maple to halt alleged default behavior. In 2024, Maple issued a record-breaking $500 million single loan, marking its resurgence. The same year, Syrup.fi (Maple Finance) transferred 702,000 EUL tokens, valued at approximately $2.3167 million, indicating active treasury management. In 2025, Maple Finance achieved a major milestone by listing SYRUP on Coinbase, enhancing accessibility. Additionally, the platform integrated with OKX Wallet, expanding its ecosystem reach. These events highlight Maple's evolution from a risky lending model to a resilient, institutional-grade onchain credit platform.
