About Lit Protocol
Lit Protocol is a decentralized key management network that runs JavaScript code inside Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). Its core business is programmable signing and encryption: developers deploy immutable code (Lit Actions) that controls private keys, enabling automated transactions, conditional signing, and cross-chain operations without trusting a central server.
The main differentiator is the combination of TEE hardware attestation with on-chain permission management. Keys are generated and used inside sealed enclaves, while authorization rules live in smart contracts on Base. This creates a verifiable and composable system where code, not humans, controls assets.
Market pain points include private key custody risks, lack of automation for multi-step blockchain operations, and the need for trusted oracles or relayers. Lit solves these by allowing conditional logic (e.g., 'sign if price > X'), cross-chain message signing, and encrypted data access controlled by on-chain rules.
In the past six months (Feb-Aug 2026), Lit launched v3 (Chipotle) as a major upgrade. The new architecture separates TEE execution, on-chain permission contracts, and immutable action code. The old Naga network was gradually sunset between March 25 and April 1, 2026, with all operations migrated to v3. The team also introduced a credit-based billing model ($0.01 per second of execution) and removed timelocks from delegated staking. No major security incidents were publicly reported during this period.
Lit Protocol is a decentralized key management protocol. Its core development milestones include: First, the Lit v0 (Habanero) mainnet beta launch, which implemented decentralized key generation and management based on threshold cryptography, establishing the protocol's foundation. Second, the Naga network, as the v1 mainnet, officially launched through the Distributed Key Generation (DKG) process, marking the network's transition from centralized authority to distributed cryptographic infrastructure. Third, the LITKEY token economics were announced, with an airdrop allocation of 4.8%, and plans for a Community Launch to establish liquidity pools on Aerodrome. Fourth, the veLITKEY governance model will be activated, allowing stakers to control 25% of tokens and guide ecosystem development. These milestones collectively form a complete evolution path from technical validation to economic incentives to decentralized governance.
