About Chaincode Labs
Chaincode Labs is a Bitcoin research and development organization founded in 2014 in New York that issues no token and serves no end users, concentrating on protocol-layer public goods: its engineers develop, review and test Bitcoin Core, contribute research and design to BIP proposals such as Cluster Mempool, TRUC transactions and Consensus Cleanup, and work on the Lightning Network through the BOLTs specifications, the Eye of Satoshi watchtower and the SimLN simulator, alongside cryptography components like MuSig2, libsecp256k1 and Miniscript. Research topics span mempool linearization, Unjamming Lightning, bandwidth-efficient transaction relay and Bitcoin's resistance to quantum computing.
Its second track is talent and knowledge supply: the residency and BOSS programs train the next generation of protocol engineers, online seminars and self-paced curricula are open to all, and there are Bitcoin scholarships, PhD summer internships, monthly BitDevs technical discussions, an annual Research Day and a research prize, with past projects including the Bitcoin Optech newsletter and the Chaincode podcast. In the ecosystem, Chaincode's output enters the Bitcoin stack as code, proposals and educational material, functioning as a standing interface between protocol developers and the academic community.
On January 12, 2026, the 2026 ₿OSS Challenge run by Chaincode Labs and Btrust Builders began, offering African developers three months of Bitcoin open-source training; several 2025 alumni have become full-time contributors funded by Btrust.
In March 2026, BIP 54, championed by Chaincode developer Antoine Poinsot, was activated on Bitcoin Inquisition's Signet. It bundles fixes for the time-warp bug, slow blocks, Merkle tree malleability and the BIP 30 stopgap; about 5% of hash rate, including MARA Pool, was already producing compatible blocks.
Chaincode Labs will keep training developers for Bitcoin Core, Lightning and BDK, advance miner coordination and a Core implementation without activation parameters for BIP 54, and sustain long-term funding for Bitcoin research.
