About Alpaca
Alpaca is a brokerage infrastructure company that provides API access to US stocks, ETFs, options, and cryptocurrencies. Its core business is enabling fintech companies and developers to embed trading capabilities directly into their own applications, rather than building brokerage backend systems from scratch.
The company's key competitive advantage lies in its regulatory compliance infrastructure. As a FINRA/SIPC member broker-dealer, Alpaca handles clearing, custody, and settlement for its partners, while its crypto arm operates as a registered Money Services Business. This compliance-first approach has made it the dominant infrastructure provider for tokenized stocks, with an estimated 94% market share in that niche.
The main market pain point Alpaca addresses is the high barrier to entry for building a regulated brokerage. Traditional brokerage setup requires months or years of licensing, compliance, and back-office integration. Alpaca solves this by offering a turnkey API solution that handles the complex regulatory and operational layers.
In the past six months, Alpaca has focused on AI-driven trading infrastructure. It launched a Trading MCP Server and CLI tools that allow large language models to execute trades via natural language commands, which has driven a roughly 4x increase in API usage growth. The company now supports over 10 million brokerage accounts across 40+ countries. Its tokenized stock custody assets have grown to exceed $1.5 billion.
However, two concerns emerged. First, AI-agent-initiated trades raise unresolved regulatory questions about trader responsibility under FINRA rules, since existing compliance frameworks assume human traders. Second, Alpaca's 94% dominance in tokenized stocks creates a single point of failure for that market — if its infrastructure experiences operational issues, the entire tokenized equity ecosystem could face disruption without viable alternatives.
Alpaca was founded in 2015 as a database and machine learning company, later pivoting to fintech. In 2018, it registered as a US broker-dealer (FINRA/SEC), establishing its compliance foundation.
In 2023, it received DTCC approval and transitioned to fully self-clearing in 2024, becoming full-stack brokerage infrastructure. In 2025, it became a member of OCC, FICC, and Nasdaq Exchange, and launched the Instant Tokenization Network (ITN), transplanting the ETF in-kind creation/redemption mechanism onto the chain to solve token de-pegging issues.
In 2026, it completed multiple funding rounds, reaching a $1.15 billion valuation as a unicorn, commanding 94% market share in tokenized US stocks. Long-term significant milestones include: self-clearing capability shifting from third-party dependence to full autonomy; ITN innovation bridging traditional securities and the crypto world; and compliance licenses providing compliant US stock trading channels for exchanges like Binance and Bitget.
