About Zcash
Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that allows users to transact with optional transparency. It offers two address types: transparent addresses (similar to Bitcoin) and shielded addresses that hide sender, receiver, and amount using zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs). Its core value lies in providing strong privacy guarantees while maintaining a fixed supply of 21 million coins, auditable through a public ledger.
The main market pain point Zcash addresses is the conflict between financial privacy and regulatory compliance. Traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are pseudonymous but transparent, while privacy coins often face delisting due to auditability concerns. Zcash solves this by offering selective disclosure: users can share view keys with auditors or regulators, proving transaction details without compromising overall privacy.
In the past six months (March–September 2026), Zcash underwent significant developments. In June 2026, a critical vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool was discovered, which could theoretically allow infinite minting of ZEC. The team responded with an emergency soft fork (Zebra 4.5.3) disabling Orchard transactions, followed by a hard fork (NU6.2) at block 3,364,600 that permanently fixed the bug. No known exploit occurred, but the incident raised concerns about supply integrity since the pool's privacy made historical exploitation undetectable.
To address this, the Ironwood upgrade (NU6.3) was activated at block 3,428,143, introducing a new shielded pool with formally verified balance integrity (using Lean proof assistant, 2,700+ theorems). The old Orchard pool became exit-only, and a turnstile mechanism ensures all migrated funds are accounted for. Additionally, the SEC concluded its investigation into Zcash without enforcement action, providing regulatory clarity. Zebra became the required node implementation, and the Zcash ecosystem continued transitioning to the Z3 protocol stack (Zebra, Zaino, Zallet).
Zcash activated the Ironwood NU6.3 upgrade, introducing a new shielded pool with formal verification to eliminate undetectable inflation risks and strengthen long-term privacy guarantees.
Zakura node targets 50,000 transactions per second, while Zakura Common library accelerates mobile proof generation by over 14 times, advancing scalable shielded infrastructure.
Grayscale’s Zcash spot ETF listing on NYSE Arca marks a milestone in institutional access after eight years of mainnet operation.
