About Nexus Mutual

Nexus Mutual is a decentralized discretionary mutual insurance protocol launched in 2019. Members pool funds by purchasing NXM tokens, and these funds back coverage for smart contract risks on DeFi protocols. Users can buy cover for specific protocols, and claims are assessed and paid out through member voting, with the process recorded on-chain.

Its core strength lies in years of accumulated DeFi risk data and underwriting experience, which has allowed it to survive multiple major incidents, including the 2022 FTX collapse, where it paid out over $4.9 million in claims. The protocol has evolved from 'DeFi Insurance 1.0' to a more capital-efficient model: it partnered with Symbiotic in late 2025 to create a restaking-based reinsurance layer, enabling capital to secure both PoS networks and Nexus cover simultaneously. It also launched Covered Vaults, which embed protection directly into lending protocols like Morpho, and the Real-World Insurance Vault, a USDC-denominated product backing regulated offchain insurance.

The main market problem it addresses is the lack of scalable and transparent insurance for DeFi users. Traditional insurance doesn't cover smart contract hacks, and early DeFi insurance models suffered from high premiums, low trust in claims, and fragmented capital. Nexus Mutual tackles this by unifying capital in a single pool, using data-driven underwriting, and providing transparent claims governance.

In the past six months (March to September 2026), Nexus Mutual has focused on scaling capacity through the Symbiotic integration, expanding Covered Vaults to more protocols, and bridging to traditional insurance capital via the Real-World Insurance Vault. It has also continued to refine its underwriting models in response to AI-driven threats. A notable negative event in the last two years was the 2022 FTX incident, which caused significant claims but also demonstrated the protocol's resilience. No other major negative incidents have been reported in the last six months.

Nexus Mutual was founded in 2019 as the first decentralized insurance protocol, pioneering on-chain risk coverage. Its core capital pool mechanism and innovations like joint staking advanced DeFi insurance. In 2024, Nexus Mutual provided up to 15,000 ETH in slashing coverage for ether.fi, marking the largest such protection in history and a major breakthrough in covering Ethereum validator risks. Since inception, the platform has underwritten over $7 billion in digital asset risks.
