About Towns
Towns is a group chat protocol and app designed for online communities, built on Base. Its core business is providing decentralized chat rooms called Spaces, where each Space is an ERC-721 NFT owned by its creator. Membership is controlled by ERC-721 tokens, and all messages are end-to-end encrypted. The main pain point it addresses is the centralization of traditional chat platforms like Discord, where platforms control data, can ban users, and censor content. Towns aims to give users true ownership and governance over their communities.
In the past six months (2026-03-07 to 2026-09-07), Towns conducted an airdrop in March 2026, but it faced community backlash. According to on-chain data and user reports, top point holders received very few tokens, and many early community builders got less than 1,000 TOWNS, while Binance users who never used the platform received 1,359 tokens. Additionally, official documentation showed inconsistencies: one page stated a 30-day lock-up period after unstaking, while another said 60 days. No public audit reports were found, and the bug bounty link led to an error page. The protocol's headline revenue counter remained unchanged for months, and the official front page promoted paid stock tips and gambling groups, raising regulatory concerns.

On September 14, 2026, Binance closed deposit rails for TOWNS on certain networks, retaining only Ethereum ERC-20 deposits, increasing asset transfer risk.
Co-founders Ben Rubin and Pat announced the transfer of protocol operations to the Swiss Towns Foundation, with both moving to part-time support, raising concerns about project continuity.

All three co-founded Towns Labs (formerly HNT) and launched Towns protocol in 2024.
