About Theta Network
Since its mainnet launch in 2019, Theta Network has progressively built a decentralized video streaming and edge computing network centered on media and entertainment. Key long-term milestones include: the 2021 launch of Theta EdgeCloud, combining distributed nodes with cloud GPUs to provide hybrid compute for AI inference and video rendering; in May 2024, EdgeCloud was integrated into the AWS Blockchain Node Runners program, enabling enterprise users to deploy edge nodes via AWS with minimal effort, marking deep convergence with mainstream cloud ecosystems. In September of the same year, the mobile version of Theta Edge Node was released, allowing Android devices to share idle compute and expanding the network to 3.9 billion active Android devices globally, laying the groundwork for future edge AI inference (e.g., TensorFlow Lite). These milestones not only expanded Theta's node scale but also validated the feasibility of its hybrid cloud-edge architecture, positioning it uniquely in the DePIN sector and providing scalable infrastructure for high-value applications such as GenAI and LLM inference.
Bullish: On August 26, 2026, Theta Labs announced unstaking 30 million THETA from its treasury to fund the 2026-2027 roadmap including EdgeCloud AI and telecom partnerships, which the market viewed positively, with THETA rising 16.4% on September 11. Edge Node entered full release, and Chiba Institute of Technology joined the EdgeCloud academic network, expanding the ecosystem. Deeper telecom partnerships with Deutsche Telekom and NTT Docomo are driving decentralization.
Bearish: The unstaked 30 million THETA may increase market supply, creating potential selling pressure. EdgeCloud's real revenue is opaque, and TFUEL inflation of ~7-9% exceeds burns, resulting in net selling pressure. Additionally, the company faces lawsuits from two former employees over false allegations, incurring legal costs and reputational risk.
Co-founders and core executives:
Mitch Liu (Co-founder & CEO): Graduated from MIT with a BS in Computer Science & Engineering and holds an MBA from Stanford. Previously founded Tapjoy, Gameview Studios, and THETA.tv. He leads Theta Network's vision of decentralized media and entertainment.
Jieyi Long (Co-founder & CTO): Holds a BS in Microelectronics from Peking University and a PhD in Computer Engineering from Northwestern University. He developed patented technologies including VR live streaming and instant replays for video games. He drives Theta's blockchain and edge network architecture.
