About Rails

Rails is a hybrid cryptocurrency exchange that combines self-custody with centralized trading performance. Its core business is perpetual futures trading, supported by an on-chain custody system where user assets are held in audited smart contracts on the Stellar network. This design addresses a key market pain point: centralized exchanges (CEXs) offer fast execution but require users to surrender asset control, creating security risks, while decentralized exchanges (DEXs) prioritize security but suffer from slow speeds and poor liquidity. Rails bridges this gap by using a centralized matching engine for sub-millisecond order execution while keeping assets verifiable on-chain, with periodic Merkle root attestations for transparency.

In the past six months (March to September 2026), Rails launched its institutional vault product on Stellar, targeting professional traders and institutions. The vault provides isolated collateral and on-chain proof of reserves, aiming to reduce counterparty risk. The platform also expanded its API offerings, including REST and WebSocket endpoints for order placement, market data, and account management. While the hybrid model is innovative, the project faces challenges: its reliance on a centralized matching engine still introduces some trust assumptions, and the Stellar-based custody layer may limit interoperability with Ethereum-based DeFi applications. Additionally, the broader regulatory environment for crypto derivatives remains uncertain, which could impact adoption. Overall, Rails is positioning itself as a practical compromise for traders seeking both security and performance, but its long-term viability depends on execution and ecosystem growth.
