About Open Custody Protocol
Open Custody Protocol (OCP) is a modular custody solution built for Web3. It aggregates different key management technologies—such as MPC, multi-sig, HSMs, and trusted custodians—into a single unified interface. This allows developers and institutions to manage digital assets across multiple chains without being locked into one vendor or security model.
The core narrative is "keychain aggregation": instead of choosing one custody provider, users can mix and match the security layers that fit their needs. This reduces the risk of single points of failure and simplifies integration, as a single API connects to multiple custody backends. The protocol also introduces a staking mechanism for its native token, OPEN, where users can stake to participate in network security and governance. A portion of transaction fees or operational activities may be used for token burns, creating a deflationary pressure over time.
The main market pain point OCP addresses is fragmentation and vendor lock-in in digital asset custody. Traditional custody solutions are often siloed, forcing users to trust a single provider. OCP aims to be the "Stripe for custody," offering a modular layer that works with both institutional-grade and self-custody solutions.
In the past six months (March to September 2026), OCP has made progress on several fronts. The OPEN staking feature went live, allowing token holders to stake and earn rewards while reducing circulating supply. The protocol also deployed its first keychain on the Warden Protocol testnet, using Fordefi's MPC technology to generate and manage testnet asset keychains. Additionally, OCP announced a token burn event: over 100 million OPEN tokens were staked, leading to a planned burn of 10 million tokens, plus an additional 865,380 OPEN burned due to operational and wallet generation activities on Warden. These steps reflect a focus on expanding integrations and refining the economic model, though the project remains in early stages of adoption.
