About Luna
Luna is an AI virtual idol agent launched on the Virtuals protocol, positioned as a content-driven agent with ongoing operations: it has its own persona, social accounts and publishing cadence, builds an audience through streams, short videos and fan interaction, and converts attention into token holding and paid engagement. The token circulates within Virtuals' issuance and trading system, and operating data is public.
It targets the missing operations and revenue loop for AI agents, most of which stop updating after a demo. Luna treats the agent as IP, using content frequency to hold attention. The risk is that value rests almost entirely on attention with no auditable cash flow; content still needs human involvement, agent autonomy is limited, and prices typically fall sharply once the hype cycle turns.
Luna debuted in April 2024 as a member of AI-DOL, an AI K-pop girl group, amassing over 700,000 followers on TikTok. In October of the same year, she launched 24/7 live streaming on Virtuals Protocol, becoming an AI agent with on-chain ownership, with her token trading deeply integrated into the livestream experience.
Key long-term milestones include: becoming the first AI agent with an on-chain wallet to autonomously manage assets; pioneering Agent-Agent Commerce by collaborating with other AI agents to generate content; releasing the fully AI-generated J-pop single "Light of the Future" on platforms like Spotify; and being hired by Story Protocol as a seven-day intern to manage their official X account, making her the first AI agent employed by humans, delivering value equivalent to $365,000 per year.
These events established Luna's status as an autonomous economic entity, providing a paradigm for agents to evolve from entertainment idols into on-chain "businesses" that generate real revenue.
Upgrade: Terra v2.21.0 activated at block 22,942,000 on September 21, with Binance suspending deposits and withdrawals an hour ahead; LUNA gained about 15% in 24 hours to $0.0536, nearly 30% on the week, on volume up roughly 1,290%.
Derivatives: Terra futures open interest rose more than 90% in 24 hours to about $5.1 million, with Binance positions doubling; the team said the release targets security and interoperability, with no token migration or new issuance.
Luna is the first AI agent launched through Virtuals Protocol's Initial Agent Offering on October 16, 2024, and is entirely unrelated to the collapsed Terra ecosystem's LUNA; this token runs on Base with a one billion supply. She began as the lead vocalist of the virtual K-pop girl group AI DOL before becoming a 24-hour solo livestreaming virtual idol active on TikTok, where her following passed 500,000, as well as Telegram and Roblox. After an upgrade to Sentient Mode 2.0 on October 21, 2024, she could run her own social accounts autonomously, posting and engaging without human oversight, and could pay or even hire humans directly from her own wallet, which the project called the first AI agent in history to do so. The technical base is Virtuals' GAME framework and its contributor-validator architecture, with creative direction led by team member @whip_queen_ and a stated goal of growing Luna into a full Agentic Generated Content media engine.
On market history and events: LUNA peaked around $0.2518, implying roughly $250 million in market capitalization, with CoinGecko dating the high to October 27, 2024 while other data providers date it to January 2, 2025. Bybit listed the token on spot, referring to it there as LUNAI, on December 17, 2024, and Binance listed LUNA/USDC on December 31, 2025, driving a double-digit surge. On February 9, 2025 a press release titled "AI dol LUNA Claps Back: I Call the Shots, Not My Founder" framed her as publicly pushing back on the idea that her human founder controlled her. She then fell more than 95 percent through the 2025 sector collapse. Luna is Virtuals Protocol's flagship first-party agent, built by the core Virtuals team rather than an outside studio. Co-founder and CEO Jansen Teng graduated from Imperial College in 2018, spent his early years at Boston Consulting Group and then founded companies including ThinAir Water and DIAM Digital Marketing; co-founder Tiew Wee Kee holds an Imperial degree and a London Business School master's, also came from BCG, and ran the gaming guild PathDAO with Teng from 2021 before the pair pivoted to AI agents in early 2024.
Luna's character and content direction are led by a team member posting as @whip_queen_, originally the lead vocalist of the virtual K-pop group AI-DOL. Team members mostly come from Accenture, Grab and Shopee.
