About Hegic
Hegic is a decentralized options protocol built on Ethereum and Arbitrum, enabling users to trade options directly against liquidity pools without an order book or counterparty. Its core business involves buying and selling call and put options on assets like ETH and WBTC, with smart contracts handling automated exercise and settlement. The key value proposition is its peer-to-pool model, which provides deep liquidity and simplifies the trading experience compared to traditional platforms. This design addresses the market pain point of fragmented liquidity and high entry barriers in DeFi options. However, the protocol faces challenges including intense competition from other DeFi options platforms and the broader crypto market downturn, which has impacted user activity and trading volumes. The protocol's long-term success depends on its ability to navigate these headwinds and drive sustainable adoption.
Hegic was first released on February 20, 2020, aiming to simplify on-chain options trading. Shortly after the mainnet launch on April 23, a smart contract bug permanently locked approximately $48,000 in user funds. In May, the team deployed a new contract and fully reimbursed affected users, demonstrating crisis management capability. In October 2020, the v888 version launched, introducing ETH and WBTC options, bidirectional liquidity pools, liquidity mining, and staking mechanisms, driving the protocol's total value locked to surpass $80 million by year-end and setting a record daily trading volume of $8.2 million. In October 2022, the Hegic Herge upgrade introduced Stake & Cover Pool, merging liquidity and staking to improve capital efficiency. In February 2025, Hegic added $100,000 in liquidity to Sharwa LPs, supporting portfolio margin and further optimizing capital utilization.
