About Coinone

Coinone, launched in 2017, is one of South Korea's five licensed virtual asset service providers (VASPs). In its early years, it established a stable trading platform and secured regulatory approval, laying the groundwork for its long-term presence in the Korean market.

A pivotal moment came in 2023 when Coinone sought to sell a portion of its shares, signaling a strategic shift to attract external capital and strengthen its competitiveness. This led to Korea Investment & Securities considering an acquisition, and later OKX Ventures joining the deal.

In May 2026, Korea Investment & Securities and OKX Ventures each invested 80 billion won to acquire a 19.6% stake in Coinone, marking the largest single investment by a global crypto giant in Korea's digital asset sector. This reshaped the ownership structure, with CEO Cha Myung-hoon retaining the largest stake and Com2uS Holdings becoming the second-largest shareholder.

Earlier, in 2025, Coinone faced regulatory action from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) for violating anti-money laundering obligations, resulting in a three-month business suspension and fines. Coinone sued the FIU to halt the penalties, highlighting the growing tension between innovation and compliance in Korea's crypto industry. These events underscore Coinone's evolution from a domestic exchange to a key player navigating regulatory challenges and global partnerships.
