Apple CEO John Ternus: Does not want to launch AI just for the sake of AI

Nov 2, 2026 08:22:28

Apple CEO John Ternus responded to external opinions on its AI progress during an interview with Wired journalist Steven Levy. He stated that although "everyone has their own opinion," he "really likes where we are right now." Ternus is a long-time executive at Apple and officially took over as CEO in early September this year.

Ternus mentioned that Apple "will definitely leverage AI in new products," but "does not want to launch AI just for the sake of AI." He believes that if done correctly, users should not have to think about whether a feature is powered by AI or traditional software; the key is whether a product is something users truly love. In response to questions about whether AI agents might make certain applications unnecessary, he stated that while it might make life easier, product creation is a profound human and personal endeavor, and it is work that Apple is happy to engage in.

In recent years, Apple has often been criticized for lagging in AI, especially with the delayed release of a more powerful version of Siri. That version was launched this summer.
