Anthropic IPO document reveals nearly 900 billion dollars in "hidden debt"
Anthropic PBC promised in its IPO filing that as infrastructure accelerates expansion, the company will spend nearly $900 billion on future obligations related to servers, buildings, and power. This scale far exceeds the liabilities listed on its balance sheet that investors can see directly.
Investors need to read the notes to Anthropic's financial statements in depth to see the details of its planned expenditures—these off-balance-sheet obligations include future leasing contracts and procurement agreements for data centers, power, and GPUs.
David Trainer, CEO of investment research firm New Constructs, stated that the commitments of this kind, known as "hidden debt," are substantial for companies like Anthropic. He said, "They must invest huge amounts of money in training, inference, and energy."
