Illinois plans to postpone the implementation of the 0.2% cryptocurrency asset tax by 6 months
After a lawsuit was filed by organizations in the cryptocurrency industry, Illinois state officials agreed to postpone the implementation date of the 0.2% digital asset tax from January 1, 2027, to July 1, to allow time to address related legal disputes. This postponement arrangement still requires court approval.
The Digital Chamber previously filed a lawsuit in July regarding this tax, arguing that the relevant provisions were included in the state budget without sufficient discussion and public feedback. The organization stated that this postponement does not mean the tax has been abolished, and they will continue to seek to overturn the tax through litigation. In addition, the Illinois Department of Revenue had previously released a draft of the implementation rules for the digital asset tax and opened a public comment period until October 30.
