About Base
Base, incubated by Coinbase, launched its mainnet in August 2023, marking a key step toward onboarding the next billion users. In 2024, it suffered two mainnet outages due to sequencer bugs, prompting protocol stress-testing improvements. A major security incident occurred when Moonwell's MAMO market on Base lost approximately $8.7 million, highlighting DeFi risks. Strategically, Base shifted focus from creator coins to trading and payments after Coinbase CEO admitted the former's failure. Founder Jesse publicly acknowledged strategic mistakes, and community trust waned, with Cobie vowing to push Coinbase closer to on-chain users. The Cobalt upgrade in September aimed at UX improvements, while programs like Base Accelerator and builder grants (up to $5,000) fostered ecosystem growth. Jesse Pollak is the creator of Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 solution incubated by Coinbase. He currently serves as Head of Protocols at Coinbase, leading the Base and Coinbase Wallet teams. Prior to this, he was Director of Engineering at Coinbase, managing the consumer web and retail engineering teams. He co-founded Clef, a passwordless two-factor authentication startup, and holds a BA in Computer Science from Pomona College.
Base has seen frequent team changes recently. In April 2026, Ben Spiegelman joined as Head of Institutional; in July, Ollie Armitage joined as Social Lead; in September, Akhil joined for Global Builders Expand.
Meanwhile, Head of Design Benji Taylor left in March (joined October 2025), and Marketing & Growth Lead India Sumedha Muralidhar left in June (joined February 2026). This shows Base is strengthening institutional, social, and ecosystem efforts while adjusting design and regional market teams.
