About Towns
Towns is a decentralised real-time group chat protocol on Base where communities themselves are on-chain assets: space contracts live on Base, messages run through a dedicated execution layer and off-chain stream nodes, membership tokens gate read and write, paid memberships take a protocol fee, messages are end-to-end encrypted, and the token carries governance and network incentives.
It targets centralised chat platforms that can ban users, take a cut and own the social graph, leaving creators unable to make membership a transferable asset. On 25 August 2026 operations moved to a Swiss foundation, on 4 September an exchange applied a monitoring tag with the token down about nine percent that day, and on 7 September another exchange announced a delisting effective 14 September. Protocol and clients still run, while exchange coverage has visibly narrowed.
Unlocks: August 5 marked one year since TGE. Per official docs, team and investor allocations (about 35% of supply) carry a one-year lock followed by two years of linear vesting; max supply is 15.328B against 2.109B circulating at listing.
Buyback and burn: Membership, tipping and trading fees feed an automatic buy-and-burn, but burn volume is far smaller than the 8% annual inflation. Cumulative protocol revenue stands at about 9,255 ETH.
Towns activated token governance on January 1, 2026 as the Towns DAO went live, letting holders vote on-chain on protocol parameters, fee structures and treasury allocation; it also transferred protocol operations to the Switzerland-based Towns Foundation to advance decentralized governance.
Towns' forward strategy keeps programmable, self-custodial Spaces communication at its core, expanding the SDK and Mini-App ecosystem and strengthening staking and governance incentives.
