About tacit

Tacit is a confidential DeFi protocol built on Bitcoin, belonging to the indexer-validated meta-protocol family like Runes and Ordinals. Its core business includes amount-hiding transfers (Pedersen commitments), anonymous spending (mixer pool), a native confidential AMM, and trustless wrapped BTC (cBTC). It uses cryptography to replace smart-contract VMs, ensuring supply conservation and amount privacy.

The market pain point is that Bitcoin transactions expose amounts publicly, lacking a programmable privacy layer. Tacit solves amount privacy, but the address graph and asset IDs remain public; full unlinkability requires additional layers like mixer round-trips.

In the past six months (March to September 2026), Tacit's mainnet continued operating; as of the analysis date, 93 assets and over 260,000 envelopes were indexed. The mixer Phase 2 ceremony was finalized on May 11, 2026, with 2,227 community contributions. However, the protocol remains experimental with no formal audit, and relies on indexer validation rather than consensus, posing a risk that asset validity could fail if indexers disagree.

From March to September 2026, tacit moved from concept to early mainnet operations. The repository was created on May 5, with the TAC asset etched at block 948,242 on May 7, marking the protocol's official launch. On May 11, the Phase 2 mixer ceremony concluded with 2,227 community contributors, beaconed by Bitcoin block 948,824, strengthening decentralized trust. By mid-May (block 949,729), 93 assets and 260,450 envelopes were indexed, showing early ecosystem activity.

On June 26, PR #53 merged, introducing confidential relay fees (opt-in per-op fee-recipient routing), EVM farm wiring, the cBTC escrow model, and a MerkleDistributor funding latch (claims stay closed until funded). These updates strengthened the economic layer and DeFi integration without altering core privacy proof logic.

Official roadmap priorities focus on privacy and custody upgrades: asset-graph privacy (hiding asset IDs via Asset Surjection Proofs), funding-leg privacy (BIP-352 silent payments), trustless cBTC custody (CTV/OP_VAULT replacing MPC), and Phase 2 trusted setup for the confidential AMM. These directions aim for fully trustless cross-chain confidential transactions, with mainnet still in early stages.
