About Skiff

Skiff is a privacy-first Web3 office suite offering end-to-end encrypted email, documents, cloud storage, and calendar services. Its core value proposition is that user data is encrypted solely by the user's own keys, ensuring the provider cannot access content. It natively supports wallet-based login and allows users to use Solana .sol domains as email addresses, bridging Web3 identities with traditional email standards.

The market pain point Skiff addresses is the lack of true privacy in mainstream tools like Gmail or Google Docs, where providers can scan and analyze user data. Skiff solves this by providing a familiar collaboration experience with cryptographic guarantees, giving users full control over their information.

In the past six months (March to September 2026), the most significant development is the announced shutdown of Notion Mail, the email client built on Skiff's infrastructure after Notion acquired Skiff in 2024. On June 25, 2026, Notion declared it would close Notion Mail on September 22, 2026, citing that most users now rely on AI agents for email management. Users were urged to export drafts and scheduled emails before September 21. Additionally, organizations relying on HIPAA coverage were advised to migrate from Notion Mail by June 30, 2026. This effectively ends the remaining traces of Skiff's email service, as the standalone Skiff suite had already been discontinued earlier.

Skiff began as an end-to-end encrypted document editor, a deliberate alternative to Google Docs, and opened public sign-ups in November 2021. In March 2022, it raised a $10.5 million Series A led by Sequoia Capital, fueling product expansion. Mail launched publicly on May 17, 2022, followed by Drive in June and Calendar in December of the same year, completing its private workspace suite. By December 2022, Skiff had grown to over 350,000 users. On February 9, 2024, Skiff announced it had been acquired by Notion, with services sunsetting on August 9, 2024 (email forwarding extended to February 9, 2025 for some users). This acquisition marked the end of Skiff as a standalone privacy-first platform, a significant turning point in its trajectory.
