About rotki
rotki is an open-source, self-hosted crypto portfolio tracker and accounting tool. Unlike mainstream cloud-based SaaS competitors, it runs entirely on the user's own computer and stores all financial data in a local encrypted database, ensuring privacy and data sovereignty.
Its core value proposition is transparency and auditability: the entire source code is public on GitHub, allowing users to verify exactly how transactions are processed, how cost basis is calculated, and how tax reports are generated. It supports FIFO, LIFO, HIFO, and ACB cost-basis methods, decodes on-chain activity into readable events, and produces exportable profit-and-loss reports.
The market pain point it addresses is the privacy risk of handing sensitive financial history to centralized cloud services. rotki gives users full control over their data while still providing professional-grade accounting features.
In the past six months (March to September 2026), rotki released v1.44.0, a major update featuring a local MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for AI assistants, a unified filter bar across the app, cross-chain bridge transfer matching, a rebuilt balance snapshot editor, and support for three new exchanges (Gate, CoinEx, Bit2Me). New protocol coverage includes Project X, Frankencoin Savings, Kinetiq, Yearn vesting escrows, Solana staking, and Jupiter Lend Earn. One caveat: after upgrading, history events may need to be re-decoded to apply the latest decoder changes, though user-edited events are left untouched.
In the past six months, rotki released v1.44.0 with several major advancements. Key highlights include: a local MCP server enabling AI assistants to analyze user data via read-only SQL queries, with strict, balanced, and raw privacy modes; cross-chain bridge matching that automatically links send and receive events; support for three new exchanges (Gate, CoinEx, Bit2Me) and multiple new protocols (Project X, Frankencoin Savings, Kinetiq, Yearn vesting escrows, Solana staking, Jupiter Lend); significant Docker improvements with smaller, non-privileged read-only containers and a software bill of materials (SBOM); and an option to skip EVM chain syncing to save bandwidth and API calls.
Regarding future roadmap, the official has not yet published a clear roadmap, but the direction of v1.44.0 suggests AI integration (MCP server) and cross-chain support are priorities.
