About MyEtherWallet
MyEtherWallet (MEW) is an open-source, non-custodial Ethereum wallet interface launched in 2015. Its core business centers on providing users with a self-managed gateway to create wallets, hold ETH and ERC-20 tokens, and sign transactions directly, with support for hardware wallets like Ledger and Trezor across web, mobile, and the Enkrypt browser extension.
MEW's core value proposition lies in its non-custodial architecture and full transparency. Private keys are generated and stored locally on user devices, never on MEW servers, making users the sole controllers of their funds. Its open-source codebase has remained uncompromised over a decade of operation, offering a verifiable security track record.
The primary pain points MEW addresses include: eliminating third-party custody risk inherent in centralized exchanges; providing granular control over gas fees and transaction details; and bridging traditional finance with DeFi by enabling access to tokenized stocks and real-world assets. However, it also shifts significant responsibility to users—mismanagement of recovery phrases or exposure to phishing sites can lead to irreversible asset loss. A notable negative event occurred in April 2018 when a DNS hijacking attack redirected some users to a fraudulent clone site, resulting in approximately 216 ETH stolen, though MEW's own code remained untouched.
In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-29), MEW integrated with Ondo Perps, enabling 24/7 leveraged trading (up to 20x) of tokenized US stocks, ETFs, and commodities directly within the wallet while maintaining self-custody. This expansion transforms MEW from a simple storage tool into a more comprehensive self-managed wealth platform, allowing users to hold both crypto assets and tokenized traditional financial instruments in one place.
MyEtherWallet (MEW), founded by Kosala Hemachandra on August 11, 2015, emerged as a critical tool for the nascent Ethereum blockchain, enabling users to interact with the network without running a full node. Its early release of a browser extension in 2016 and hardware wallet support (Ledger, Trezor) established a security-first approach that became industry standard. The 2018-2019 period saw the launch of MEW 5 and the mobile app, democratizing access to DeFi and NFTs. In 2020, MEW introduced ETH staking and the ethVM explorer, while 2021 brought multi-chain support (Polygon, BNB Chain) and liquid staking. The 2022 release of Enkrypt, a multichain browser wallet, extended its reach beyond Ethereum to Bitcoin, Solana, and Polkadot ecosystems. By 2025, MEW added native Bitcoin support to its mobile wallet, cementing its evolution from an Ethereum-only interface to a comprehensive multi-chain platform. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025, MEW remains the longest continuously running project in the Ethereum ecosystem, with over 3 million mobile downloads, embodying a decade of user-centric innovation in self-custody.
In the past six months, MyEtherWallet (MEW) has accelerated its shift from an Ethereum wallet to an "onchain finance console." Key developments include: integrating Ondo Stocks to support 400+ tokenized US equities/ETFs, allowing users to directly buy Apple, Nvidia, SpaceX and others within a self-custody wallet; then launching Ondo Perps for 24/7 perpetual trading on US stocks, ETFs and commodities with up to 20x leverage, while remaining non-custodial. The official "Hot Stock Summer" campaign rewards trading and holding tokenized stocks for at least 14 days; data shows over 65% of users return for repeated investing, and 10,000+ users explore tokenized equities daily.
Future focus: positioning the wallet as a one-stop platform aggregating traditional finance and onchain assets, supporting BTC, SOL, RWAs, tokenized stocks and perps; adhering to open-source, non-custodial, no-VC principles; advancing Bring Your Own Wallet interoperability, mobile expansion, deeper DeFi integration, and targeting Korea with full Korean localization.
