About L2BEAT

L2BEAT is an open-source analytics and research platform focused on Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solutions. It tracks key metrics such as Total Value Locked (TVL), transaction throughput, and fees, while also conducting in-depth risk assessments of each project's architecture, including sequencer decentralization, proof systems, upgrade mechanisms, and data availability. Its most influential contribution is the Rollup Stage framework, which classifies L2s into Stage 0/1/2 based on decentralization and security maturity — a standard now widely adopted across the industry.

The core problem L2BEAT solves is the severe information asymmetry in the L2 ecosystem. Users and researchers often struggle to compare projects with very different technical designs, and marketing claims can obscure real risks. By providing standardized, verifiable, and independently maintained data, L2BEAT enables more informed decisions and pushes projects toward greater transparency and decentralization.

Over the past six months (March to September 2026), L2BEAT has continued to expand its coverage of new and emerging L2s, including appchains and projects using novel proof systems. It has also actively engaged in public technical debates — for instance, its head researcher publicly questioned Robinhood Chain's 7-day withdrawal challenge period, arguing that some L2s may treat long withdrawal windows as a product feature rather than a security necessity. This reflects L2BEAT's ongoing commitment to rigorous, independent scrutiny of industry practices. No major negative incidents involving L2BEAT itself were reported during this period.

Updated: Sep 8, 2026

Since its founding in 2020, L2BEAT has monitored L2 contracts and upgrades. In June 2023, inspired by Vitalik Buterin's proposal, it introduced the Stages framework, grading rollups from Stage 0 to 2 to measure decentralization and trust minimization, which became an industry benchmark. In October 2024, it released an updated Data Availability risk framework, distinguishing risks between DA layer security and DA bridge security, and refining economic security, fraud detection, committee composition, and upgradeability dimensions. In 2025, it further revised project categorization, requiring L2 classification to include a proof system and moving non-compliant projects into an "Others" category, pushing the ecosystem to improve trust-assumption transparency. These milestones have had a lasting impact on L2 risk perception and security practices.
