About Fission

FISSION is a research lab focused on building shared infrastructure for Web3. Its core project, FISSION Codes, establishes a universal set of status codes for smart contracts, similar to how HTTP status codes standardize web APIs. These codes (256 in total, organized in a 16x16 grid) provide a common vocabulary for contracts to communicate outcomes—success, failure, permission issues, timeouts, and more—making interactions more predictable and interoperable.

The core value proposition is treating smart contract interfaces as semantic layers rather than purely mechanical ones. While standards like ERC20 define method signatures (the 'how'), FISSION Codes define the 'what'—the meaning behind each response. This enables developers to build autonomous error handling, create human-readable messages, and connect data across different contracts without bespoke integration code.

Key market pain points addressed: (1) Inconsistent error handling across smart contracts, forcing developers to write custom parsing logic; (2) Data siloed behind proprietary interfaces, limiting composability; (3) Poor user feedback when transactions fail, making debugging difficult. FISSION solves these by offering a standardized, extensible code system that works across chains and protocols.

Regarding development in the past six months (2026-03-12 to 2026-09-12), no reliable public information was found. The project's GitHub shows ongoing maintenance but no significant feature releases or ecosystem announcements during this period. The last notable activity remains the original ERC-1066 and ERC-1444 proposals.
