About Fedi

Fedi is a Bitcoin wallet app that combines chat, community spaces, and Mini Apps in one place. Its core model is 'community custody': a group of trusted members, called Guardians, jointly manage funds through a multisig setup, eliminating the single point of failure of self-custody or centralized exchanges.

The main pain point it addresses is the trade-off between security and convenience. Self-custody puts all risk on the individual (lost seed phrases, device failure), while exchanges introduce counterparty risk. Fedi offers a middle path: funds are held by a federation, requiring a threshold of Guardians to move money, and transactions use ecash for privacy. The app also supports 'Multispend' for shared community funds and 'Stable Balance' for fiat-pegged balances.

In the past six months (Feb–Aug 2026), Fedi released version 26.4.0 in April, which simplified onboarding, redesigned the wallet interface, and enabled user-to-user Stable Balance transfers. The company also expanded its community features, allowing groups to create shared spaces with channels, direct messages, and customizable Mini Apps for calendars, documents, and local payments. These updates focus on making the app more accessible to non-technical users and deepening its use case for organized communities.

No major negative events were reported in the last two years. The project is distinct from other 'Fedi' namesakes in the crypto space.

Key advances (2026-03-14 to 2026-09-14):

  1. Fully open-sourced (by Jan 3, 2026 promise; confirmed in June 2026), enabling community-driven evolution and no lock-in.
  2. Stable Balance user-to-user transfers launched (v26.4.0, April 2026), letting users send fiat-pegged value directly without converting to Bitcoin first.
  3. 256D Mini App enables Bitcoin payments settling via India's UPI network, up to 200 INR per transaction.
  4. Boltz Mini App allows atomic swaps between Lightning, on-chain, Liquid, and Rootstock layers.

Future focus (official):

  • Building a decentralized Mini App ecosystem (using WebLN/Nostr) and Fedimint SDK for third-party wallet services.
  • Expanding Stable Balance with a two-sided pool (Seekers/Providers) for short-term stability vs. long-term volatility exposure.
  • Scaling Bitcoin layer interoperability and real-world fiat payment rails (e.g., UPI).
