About Facet

Facet is an Ethereum-based smart contract optimization protocol that functions as a Layer 2 execution layer. Its core business is providing low-cost, secure transaction processing for Ethereum assets and applications.

Its main competitive advantage is 'unstoppability'. Unlike traditional rollups that rely on multi-signature admin keys for upgrades or halts, Facet uses an immutable core contract. There are no admin keys, no upgrade paths, and no ability to pause or censor transactions. Anyone can propose blocks, and correctness is enforced by ZK fault proofs. Upgrades are done through forks, leaving users with full choice.

Market pain points addressed: existing rollups have centralized control points—admins can halt chains, upgrade rules, or freeze assets. Facet eliminates this trust assumption. It also reduces transaction costs by optimizing calldata usage, making it cheaper for high-frequency or data-heavy applications.

In the past six months (2026-03-02 to 2026-09-02), Facet has focused on expanding its ecosystem tooling. Development has progressed on facet-node (consensus client) and facet-geth (execution client), both derived from the OP Stack. The zk-fault-proofs system, which combines optimistic defaults with ZK dispute resolution, has been refined. Additionally, the facet-sdk (TypeScript) and facet-sol (Foundry) libraries have been updated to simplify developer integration. A public metrics dashboard at fct.fyi tracks FCT token issuance and network activity. No major security incidents or negative events were reported during this period.

Key Facet developments (2026-03-15 to 2026-09-15):

  1. Co-founder Tom Lehman submitted EIP-8182 for Ethereum's Hegota upgrade, proposing a protocol-managed UTXO shielded pool (no admin key, proxy, or pause mechanism) enabling native private ETH/ERC-20 transfers on the base layer, solving privacy-pool cold-start fragmentation, with EIP-8141 and EIP-8250 as complements.

  2. Became L2Beat's first general-purpose Stage 2 rollup with a fully green risk dashboard: no privileged sequencer, on-chain data availability, non-upgradeable contracts, and no canonical bridge. FCT tokens are dynamically minted from L1 ETH burns.

  3. Released an SP1-based ZK fault proof system using a dual-track optimistic + validity proof design, replacing the 7-day fraud proof window.

  4. Facet Protocol v0.1 launched with spec, TypeScript/Python SDKs, cross-language conformance vectors, and ed25519-signed audit, integrating KYAPay, MCP, x402, and RFC 9421 open standards.

Future focus: push EIP-8182 into the Hegota upgrade for unified privacy infrastructure; advocate the "Unstoppable Stage 2 Rollup" standard (no admin intervention under any circumstances); open RFCs for v0.2.
