About EthStorage
EthStorage is a storage-oriented Layer 2 on Ethereum that gives on-chain applications low-cost, large-capacity storage readable and writable by key. It addresses a structural constraint of Ethereum itself: the execution layer keeps only a state root, and calldata and blob data are discarded by nodes after a few weeks, so content that must stay readable, such as NFT metadata, game saves and on-chain front ends, ends up on centralized servers or content-addressed pinning layers. EthStorage splits data into chunks held in key-value stores run by storage nodes, which stake tokens and periodically submit proofs of data possession showing they hold the segments they claim. Sequencing and execution still rely on Ethereum, while storage proofs are verified by contracts before incentives settle.
Use cases center on data that must be verifiable on-chain and readable long term: dynamic NFT attributes, fully on-chain game state and archival of rollup history. Rather than one-time payment for permanent storage, it uses a rent model renewed over time, and its key-value interface resembles a database, letting contracts query a specific key instead of retrieving a whole file by content hash.
EthStorage, a Layer 2 solution for programmable dynamic storage, launched its mainnet on October 14, 2025, marking a key milestone in Ethereum's modular roadmap by adding a decentralized storage layer alongside computation and consensus layers. In March 2024, the project initiated its public testnet, attracting over 170 nodes that submitted more than 490 storage proofs, demonstrating the viability of community-run storage networks. The testnet campaigns, which ran through mid-2024, showcased decentralized frontends and backends for dApps, proving the practicality of permanent web deployment. A significant technical milestone was the completion of a public trusted setup ceremony in August 2025, involving 287 contributors worldwide, which secured the zk-SNARK circuits underpinning the protocol's proof system. Additionally, in December 2024, EthStorage completed a comprehensive security audit by Salus, reinforcing the robustness of its infrastructure. These developments collectively establish EthStorage as a foundational component for long-term data availability, enabling cost-effective permanent storage at approximately 0.1% of Ethereum L1 costs, and supporting advanced use cases such as fully on-chain AI agents.
On 8 January 2026 EthStorage published its annual report confirming that mainnet Alpha was live on Ethereum, with a Layer 2 storage network preserving data after blobs expire, scaling programmable key-value storage to petabytes at roughly three orders of magnitude below onchain cost. On 23 June the team detailed a client-side verification scheme built with Colibri that lets front ends verify data provenance in the browser without running a full node.
Through 2026 EthStorage continued work on the web3:// access protocol and randomised sampling proofs, paying storage providers in ETH to maintain many replicas. Its proposed EIP-7907 advanced as a candidate for Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade to relax contract size limits.
Future strategy and roadmap: EthStorage will extend long-term data availability to more rollups and onchain applications, complete its tooling for verifiable front ends, and use provider incentives plus retrieval optimisation to bring cold-data reads down to practical latency.
