About Dune
Dune is a blockchain data analytics platform that lets users query decoded on-chain data via SQL without running nodes, and build visual dashboards. Its core business is cross-chain data infrastructure, covering EVM, Solana, and other chains, with standardized transfers, logs, and labels for analysts, auditors, and compliance teams.
The key competitive advantage is its community-driven data network: a large library of public dashboards and queries can be forked and modified, creating a 'data Lego' ecosystem. Dune also lowers the barrier with AI tools like Wand and MCP, enabling natural language to SQL generation.
The market pain point is that raw on-chain data is hard to read directly, and building custom indexers is expensive. Dune solves data decoding, standardization, and querying, allowing non-technical users to gain on-chain insights.
In the past six months (March to September 2026), Dune launched Dune MCP in March, allowing AI agents to access on-chain data in real time. In May, it released a multi-chain data stack for audit and tax reconciliation, offering Token Transfers, Decoded Logs, and Labels datasets. In August, it introduced Real World Asset (RWA) datasets. Meanwhile, Dune's free tier was reported to be shifting to read-only mode, raising community concerns about openness; in May, the company cut about 25% of staff (~35 people), reflecting commercialization pressure.
Negative developments: the tightening of free-tier limits and layoffs are significant, but core functionality remains intact.
Dune was founded in 2018 by Fredrik Haga and Mats Olsen in Oslo, Norway. Initially a B2B paid dashboard, it pivoted to a free open community product, establishing itself as the "standard for crypto data."
During DeFi Summer in 2020, Dune became a key platform for tracking onchain data and closed its seed round. In 2021, it launched the rebuilt Dune V2 and completed Series A and a $1B valuation Series B, with a team of only 16.
In 2023, Dune launched the enterprise solution Dune Catalyst, enabling data access from multiple networks for institutional clients. In 2024, it integrated over 50 parallel chains in the Polkadot ecosystem and launched a real-world asset (RWA) dataset, expanding into tokenized traditional assets.
In 2026, Dune laid off 25% of staff to focus on AI and institutional clients, launching Dune MCP, which lets teams and AI agents build dashboards without SQL. The founder emphasized sufficient funding, shifting toward "AI + institutional onchain adoption." These milestones mark Dune's evolution from an analytics tool to an onchain data infrastructure.
