About Dappnode
Dappnode is an open-source platform designed to simplify the operation of blockchain nodes, particularly for Ethereum and related networks. Its core offering is a dedicated operating system (DAppNodeOS) that can be installed on commodity hardware or a pre-configured device, turning it into a self-managed node server.
The primary problem it solves is the technical barrier to running nodes. Traditionally, running a validator or full node requires significant command-line expertise, ongoing maintenance, and security management. Dappnode abstracts this complexity through a web-based graphical interface, allowing users to install, update, and monitor node software with a few clicks. It also includes features like automatic updates, remote access via VPN, and a package manager (DAppNode Package) that functions like an app store for various blockchain services.
Its competitive position is built on being a self-sovereign, user-friendly alternative to centralized staking services or cloud-based node providers. By keeping keys on user-controlled hardware and simplifying the process, it aims to strengthen home-staking and network decentralization.
In the past two years (2024-2026), Dappnode has faced some public criticism. Notably, in 2024, there were community reports of issues with certain software updates that temporarily affected node performance for some users. Additionally, in 2025, there were discussions about delays in shipping pre-built hardware units to some customers, which led to frustration among buyers. These incidents highlight operational challenges but do not appear to have fundamentally altered the project's trajectory.
DAppNode was launched in October 2017 to build decentralized infrastructure through personally owned hardware, addressing the centralization of blockchain infrastructure. The project was open-sourced on GitHub in February 2018, with the v0.1.x first alpha released in June 2018. Later, v0.2.0 was released, migrating to OpenVPN and Debian 10 for improved connection stability and open-source compliance. The project received funding from the Ethereum Foundation, Ethereum Community Fund, Aragon NEST, GitCoin, and others. Version v0.3.21 was released in 2026, continuing iterative development. The partnership with Gnosis Chain has deployed over 1,132 validators, validating its long-term value as a decentralized node solution.
