About Catena

Catena is a banking and governance platform built specifically for AI agents, offering them financial services such as accounts, payments, and stablecoin transactions. Its core narrative centers on 'human-controlled autonomy': AI agents can transact independently, but all actions are governed by preset policies, audit trails, and human approval mechanisms, ensuring safety and compliance.

The market pain point Catena addresses is that traditional financial systems are designed for humans, leaving AI agents unable to open accounts, conduct compliant transactions, or be held accountable. This limits the development of the AI-driven economy. Catena solves this by providing an agent-native financial infrastructure with built-in governance and oversight.

In the past six months (February to August 2026), Catena has expanded its private access program, with select businesses already using its services across trust/compliance and financial operations. It also released an open-source toolkit (Agent Commerce Kit) to help developers integrate agent payments and identity. While no major negative events were reported, the broader industry still faces challenges such as AI agent fraud and regulatory uncertainty, which Catena aims to mitigate through its governance-first design.

Catena, an AI-native banking platform, has marked two significant milestones. In 2025, the company completed an $18 million seed round led by a16z crypto, establishing its initial vision of building financial infrastructure for AI agents. This early backing validated the concept of agent-centric banking and laid the foundation for subsequent development. In May 2026, Catena raised $30 million in Series A funding, co-led by a16z crypto and Acrew Capital, with participation from Breyer Capital, Circle Ventures, and others. This round not only provided substantial capital but also signaled growing institutional confidence in the AI-agent economy. More importantly, Catena announced its application for a New York trust bank charter with the OCC, a strategic move toward becoming a regulated entity. This regulatory ambition distinguishes Catena from unregulated crypto platforms and positions it to offer compliant custody and payment services for AI agents. These two funding events, combined with the regulatory application, represent Catena's evolution from concept to a credible, regulated player in the emerging AI-agent financial sector.

In the past six months, Catena officially opened Private Access to its banking and governance platform for AI agents, with businesses already using identity, compliance, fiat/stablecoin liquidity, risk management, and yield services . The company disclosed a $30M Series A co-led by a16z crypto and Acrew, bringing total financing to $48M; it also filed for a National Trust Bank charter with the OCC to become a regulated fiduciary for AI agents . On technology, Catena partnered with Turnkey to enforce agent policy at the signing layer inside a TEE, ensuring funds cannot move on the agent's or platform's say-so alone, and plans to encode customer guardrails into smart contracts . Catena also joined Mastercard Agent Pay for Machines as an initial participant, providing identity, policy, limits, and audit controls for agent payments . Future focus: obtain the bank charter, expand governance to third-party custodial accounts, apply consistent policy across more rails and on-chain contracts, and continue building scalable trusted agentic finance infrastructure.
