About Base
Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 incubated by Coinbase and built as an Optimistic Rollup on the OP Stack, trading lower execution cost for higher throughput while inheriting Ethereum security. It targets two practical problems: L1 gas fees and confirmation times that do not suit high-frequency, small-value activity, and the lack of compliance-friendly standards for institutional token issuance. Its core mechanism batches transactions through a sequencer and posts them to L1 for verification, shares open-source components with other superchain networks, and offers token standards aimed at institutional asset issuance.
The trade-off is that sequencing is still performed by a single sequencer, leaving decentralization a long-standing question. The superchain model lets upgrades be reused across chains but compresses differentiation, so Base's edge comes more from Coinbase distribution and compliance resources than from any unique base-layer protocol.
On February 23, 2023, Coinbase announced and launched the Base testnet, an OP Stack-based Ethereum L2 emphasizing security, low cost and EVM compatibility.
On August 9, 2023, Base mainnet launched in public beta, quickly attracting users through Coinbase's ecosystem and fiat on-ramps.
On October 30, 2024, Base activated permissionless fault proofs on mainnet, advancing toward rollup Stage 1 decentralization.
In 2024, Base launched on-chain identity and social apps, pushing consumer adoption.
In 2025, Base's TVL surpassed $50B, ranking among the largest Ethereum L2s.
On June 25, 2026, a sequencer consensus bug caused a ~2-hour Base outage, exposing centralization risk.
Base shipped three independent mainnet upgrades in 2026. Azul went live in May, cutting withdrawals from 7 days to 1 day and introducing a dual TEE + ZK multiproof security architecture; Beryl in June reduced withdrawals further to 5 hours and optimized Reth V2; July brought the compliance-first B20 native token standard (ERC-20 compatible). The Cobalt hard fork on September 30 extended B20 and added conditional validity transactions.
Base treats 200ms blocks as the entry ticket for high-frequency flow: Denim retires Flashblocks and speeds block numbers up tenfold, forcing market makers and liquidation logic to be rewritten, a migration that itself screens the ecosystem. The real pressure comes from distribution, where Robinhood Chain overtook Base on daily active users and transaction count within weeks while Stripe keeps building stablecoin rails; Base therefore handed its social products back to Coinbase, leaving Pollak with the chain alone and recasting it as a settlement layer through trading, payments and financing, with Cloudflare pushing machine payments toward one million per second on the bet that machine-to-machine flows scale before retail social ones. Its upgrade cadence has likewise moved from following OP Stack to self-published releases, with Azul the first Base-defined upgrade.
Base has no separate corporate entity and the team sits inside Coinbase. Its lead, Jesse Pollak, joined Coinbase in 2017, worked on payments and wallets, ran Coinbase Wallet from 2021, and formed the Base team in 2023. From July 2026 he has concentrated on the chain, handing application work to the Base App team. He reports to senior Coinbase leadership.
Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong is the incubator and final decision-maker, and major personnel changes need his sign-off. Base App lead Jordan Fish, known as Cobie, joined in 2025 from crypto media and investing, and now runs the client team, having recruited engineers from social and consumer apps. Engineering, ecosystem and growth share back-office functions with Coinbase, each lead reporting to Pollak or Fish.
Base has seen frequent team changes recently. In April 2026, Ben Spiegelman joined as Head of Institutional; in July, Ollie Armitage joined as Social Lead; in September, Akhil joined for Global Builders Expand.
Meanwhile, Head of Design Benji Taylor left in March (joined October 2025), and Marketing & Growth Lead India Sumedha Muralidhar left in June (joined February 2026). This shows Base is strengthening institutional, social, and ecosystem efforts while adjusting design and regional market teams.
