About Ampleforth
Ampleforth (AMPL) is a rebase-type cryptocurrency on Ethereum that adjusts its supply daily to target a price of 1 USD (CPI-adjusted). Unlike traditional stablecoins, it does not rely on collateral or central issuers; instead, the protocol automatically expands or contracts the token supply held in each wallet proportionally, keeping holders' percentage ownership unchanged. Its core narrative is 'elastic supply' as a solution to the stablecoin trilemma: it aims to be decentralized, price-stable, and scalable without collateral.
Market pain points it addresses include the fragility of collateral-backed stablecoins (e.g., bank runs, centralization) and the volatility of non-stable crypto assets. By absorbing demand shocks through supply adjustments, AMPL seeks to serve as a unit of account and collateral for DeFi.
In the past six months (2026-03-01 to 2026-09-01), the most notable event was the delisting from Bitfinex: trading ceased on March 4, 2026, and withdrawals closed on May 4, 2026. This reduced exchange accessibility and liquidity. No other major protocol upgrades or partnerships were confirmed in the available information. The project remains operational, but its exchange footprint has narrowed.
Ampleforth launched in 2019. Its core token AMPL uses a rebasing mechanism to track the CPI-adjusted dollar, shifting demand volatility to supply without diluting holders. In 2021, it issued the governance token FORTH, airdropped to over 70,000 addresses, introducing on-chain governance based on Compound Governor and Timelock—a key step toward decentralization. Later, Ampleforth launched the SPOT protocol, tranching AMPL volatility into senior and junior shares to create the low-volatility asset SPOT, and secured $1 million strategic funding from Coinbase Ventures, advancing the flatcoin concept. In 2025, a suspected malicious proposal tried to move 2.538 million USDC from the treasury to the proposer, requiring only about $132,000 to reach the FORTH threshold, exposing structural risks in governance access and treasury execution controls. This incident highlighted that DAO treasuries face not only code vulnerabilities but also governance configuration risks, serving as a warning for on-chain governance security.
