WonderFi

WonderFi is a Canadian digital asset company operating regulated crypto trading platforms Bitbuy and Coinsquare. Its core business is providing compliant crypto trading services to retail and institutional clients under the oversight of the Ontario Securities Commission and the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization. The company's key narrative is regulatory compliance: while many international platforms have exited Canada due to strict rules, WonderFi has built a fully licensed, CIRO-member trading venue. The market pain it addresses is the lack of trusted, regulated entry points for Canadians to buy and sell crypto, especially after high-profile exchange collapses like QuadrigaCX. Its SmartPay payment business was discontinued in July 2025.

In the past six months (February to August 2026), WonderFi was acquired by Robinhood for approximately $180 million USD, with the deal closing on June 1, 2026. Existing Bitbuy and Coinsquare users were invited to transition to the Robinhood app, and WonderFi's institutional partnerships were retained. Following the acquisition, Robinhood's non-US customer base exceeded one million, with WonderFi contributing about 300,000 clients. Notably, WonderFi's founder publicly criticized Canada's restrictive crypto regulations and fragmented securities oversight as factors that limited the company's growth and ultimately made it a takeover target.
