About Verus

Verus is a public blockchain protocol with a fair launch in 2018, featuring no premine, no public token offering, and no developer fees or tax, with all coins produced through mining and staking. It uses Proof of Power, a hybrid consensus that combines proof-of-work and proof-of-stake at roughly half each to resist 51% hash attacks; because the algorithm is optimized for general-purpose processors, phones and ARM devices can participate in mining, and multiple chains can be merge-mined simultaneously.

Verus's defining characteristic is implementing currencies, DeFi, identity, and data at the protocol layer rather than through smart contracts, using what it calls smart transactions, validated by every node under consensus rules and thereby avoiding contract-vulnerability risk. Its PBaaS (Public Blockchains as a Service) mechanism lets anyone permissionlessly launch interoperable independent blockchains for horizontal scaling, with chains communicating through the Verus Internet Protocol and connected to Ethereum via a non-custodial, consensus-secured bridge. The protocol layer also embeds VerusID self-sovereign identity and namespaces (with tens of thousands registered) plus optional zk-SNARKs-based private transactions, positioning itself as decentralized finance and identity infrastructure usable without writing contracts.

Hacks: On May 18 the Verus-Ethereum bridge was exploited for about $11.58 million; on May 22 the attacker returned 4,052 ETH (about $8.5 million) under a bounty deal, keeping a $2.8 million bounty; on July 23 the same bridge was hit again for about $7.5 million using the same bug class, with VRSC falling about 14% on the day (after a roughly 48% one-day crash in May).

Milestones: In August VRSC listed on WhiteBIT (VRSC/BTC, USD, EUR pairs) and Verus Desktop 0.7.0-4 shipped with VerusHash 2.2 support; on August 25 a critical security update v1.2.17-6 was released.

Updated: Oct 30, 2026

Verus shipped a protocol upgrade that restored import verification for cross-chain transactions, paired with a notification oracle that pauses unupgraded nodes. The chain imports and verifies transactions while coordinating with external networks through an oracle.

A May 17 exploit caused Verus to lose roughly 26.6% of ETH and tBTC reserves held in Ethereum contracts; the v1.2.17 release restores vETH and tBTC.vETH to 1:1 reserve backing and provides a phased compensation path for affected users that grows with usage.
