About Unstoppable Domains

Unstoppable Domains is a blockchain-based domain provider that sells NFT domains with extensions such as .crypto, .x, and .nft. Unlike traditional DNS domains, these are purchased once with no renewal fees, and ownership is stored on-chain in the user's wallet. The core value proposition is self-custody: the holder controls the domain entirely, and it can be used as a crypto wallet address, a decentralized website gateway, or a digital identity across supported apps.

The main market pain point it addresses is the traditional domain system's recurring costs and centralized control. By contrast, Unstoppable domains cannot be seized by a registrar, and there is no annual fee. However, a key limitation is that these domains are not natively recognized by standard browsers or ICANN infrastructure; they require plugins, gateways, or crypto-friendly browsers to resolve.

In the past six months (February to August 2026), a significant negative development occurred: Unstoppable Domains withdrew its ICANN application for new top-level domains such as .crypto and .nft, citing that compliance and auction costs would exceed potential revenue. The company had previously planned to integrate these web3 domains into the traditional DNS system, but that plan is now terminated. It has begun refunding affected customers, though the process has faced some criticism regarding eligibility and timing. The company stated that web3 domains remain functional as blockchain assets, but they will not gain native DNS resolution in the near future.

Updated: Aug 29, 2026

Founded in 2018, Unstoppable Domains pioneered NFT-based domain names with one-time purchase and permanent ownership, registering over 2.5 million domains and raising $65 million at a $1 billion valuation in 2022.

In 2024, the company achieved ICANN accreditation, becoming a recognized registrar and signaling a bridge between Web3 domains and the traditional DNS system. This milestone was followed by a partnership with Pudgy Penguins to launch the .pudgy domain, integrating NFT communities with decentralized identity.

However, in 2026, Unstoppable Domains abruptly abandoned its ICANN application for its own Web3 suffixes (such as .crypto and .nft), citing high compliance costs and low demand. The company began refunding affected users, while continuing to support partner applications like Telegram's .gram. This reversal marked a strategic retreat from mainstream DNS integration.

Additionally, the official website suffered a security attack, prompting a public warning to users. These events collectively highlight the volatile path of Web3 domains toward broader adoption.

From Mar to Sep 2026, Unstoppable Domains (now Unstoppable) shifted strategy significantly. On Aug 5, it launched Unstoppable.ai, positioning it as an AI agent workspace and IDE, while keeping domain business on UnstoppableDomains.com . On Aug 25, it confirmed five partner TLD applications with ICANN: .AGI, .ROBOT, .GRAM (with Telegram), .HUB, and .XMR; meanwhile, it abandoned 14 TLD applications, including its own .CRYPTO, .NFT, .WALLET, .BITCOIN, .DAO, .UNSTOPPABLE, .ZIL, and .BLOCKCHAIN, plus five partner extensions . The founder said existing Web3 domains remain on-chain, over 90% of business now comes from traditional DNS, and sales of Web3-only domains fell short . Future focus: AI agent products and acting as registry service provider for partners like Telegram. Roadmap: ICANN evaluation/objections/auctions in late 2026; approvals mid-2027; new gTLDs live late 2027 into 2028 .
