About The Defiant
In June 2019, former Bloomberg journalist Camila Russo founded The Defiant, initially as a daily newsletter focused on decentralized finance (DeFi), making it one of the earliest independent media outlets in the space.
In 2020, Russo published The Infinite Machine, a history of Ethereum, during the "DeFi Summer" boom. The Defiant rapidly grew its subscriber base through in-depth explanatory reporting and began introducing paid subscriptions and sponsorships, transitioning from a personal newsletter into a media business.
In 2021, The Defiant raised a $1.4M pre-seed round from investors including IDEO CoLab Ventures and ParaFi Capital, with funds earmarked for building an onchain data platform and transforming into a Web3-native media company, further cementing its position as a key DeFi information source.
These milestones reflect the evolution from an independent newsletter to a data platform and from single-format content to diversified operations, carrying long-term industry significance.
The Defiant was founded solely by Camila Russo in June 2019; she is founder and CEO. Russo, a former Bloomberg journalist covering crypto and emerging markets, authored "The Infinite Machine" on Ethereum's history.
Felipe Aravena Loxley serves as COO & Co-owner, managing daily operations and business development alongside Russo. No other co-founders have been confirmed.
