About Tari
Tari is a privacy-focused blockchain protocol with a dual-layer architecture. Layer 1 (Minotari) is secured by proof-of-work mining, while Layer 2 (Ootle) is a Byzantine fault-tolerant network for smart contracts with programmable confidentiality. Its core business revolves around enabling private stablecoins, NFTs, DeFi, and streaming payments.
The key narrative is "programmable privacy": users can hide transaction amounts and asset holdings via Pedersen commitments, while regulators or issuers can still enforce compliance through view keys or freeze mechanisms. This addresses a major market pain point—public blockchains expose all financial data, while fully private systems often conflict with regulatory requirements. Tari's design offers a middle path: confidential by default, but with controlled transparency when needed.
In the past six months (Feb-Aug 2026), Tari launched the Esmeralda testnet, enabling interactive testing of its L2 features including stealth tokens, NFT minting, and the burn bridge between L1 and L2. The team released a Python client and continued work on a TypeScript SDK. A community reward program distributed XTM tokens to testnet participants. Notably, a detailed code review of the stablecoin contract revealed it is roughly 80% complete, with known bugs in compliance functions, no third-party security audit, and a single-admin risk—suggesting production readiness is still 12-18 months away under current pace.
Tari was founded by early Monero contributors and has raised over $14 million since 2018, backed by Blockchain Capital, Pantera, and others. Its mainnet launched on May 6, 2025, alongside the Tari Universe desktop mining app, which uses merged mining with Monero, integrates Mimblewimble for lightweight anonymous transactions, and introduces reusable emoji address systems. The self-developed RandomX algorithm is ASIC-resistant to prevent hash rate centralization.
In June 2025, Tari Universe v1.2.0 introduced wXTM cross-chain functionality, enabling one-click bridging of XTM to Ethereum mainnet as wXTM via the LayerZero OFT standard, marking the first interaction with the Ethereum ecosystem.
In September 2026, Tari announced its community takeover phase, establishing the Tari Council as the governance core, introducing the Core Contributor program, and confirming the Ootle (Layer2 network) launch for November 11. Ootle uses BFT consensus with sharding to support programmable privacy, paired with the XTM/XTR dual-token mechanism to form a value loop. The consensus mechanism is evolving from two lanes to four, adding Cuckaroo29 to boost GPU mining participation.
