About Swan

Swan is a Bitcoin-focused financial services company. Its core business includes buying and selling Bitcoin (one-time or recurring), retirement accounts (Swan IRA), high-net-worth and corporate services (Swan Private), and custody solutions (Swan Vault, a collaborative multi-signature cold storage product, and Swan Sovereign, which lets users hold 100% of their own keys with expert guidance).

The company's main narrative is simplicity and security for long-term Bitcoin accumulation. It addresses the market pain point that self-custody is technically complex and risky for average users, while exchange custody carries counterparty risk. Swan's Vault uses multi-signature technology to reduce the risk of a single compromised key or device, and its Sovereign service provides step-by-step assistance for users who want full self-custody.

In the past six months (February to August 2026), a major industry event was the Coldcard hardware wallet vulnerability disclosed in late July, which affected single-sig wallets. Swan was not impacted, but it temporarily paused withdrawals to Coldcard-labeled addresses as a precaution, published technical analysis, and offered free help to affected users, including non-customers. In early August, Swan opened its Sovereign self-custody service to everyone. Around the same time, CEO Cory Klippsten noted that retail investors, not institutional ETFs, remain the main driver of actual Bitcoin demand. No major negative news specific to Swan was found in the available information.

Swan Bitcoin, a bitcoin financial services firm, paused its IPO and laid off staff in September 2024, citing disagreements with a key capital partner over the custody mining business, which led to a funding shortfall and forced cost cuts. Shortly after, Swan filed a federal lawsuit in California accusing former employees and executives of colluding with Tether to steal its bitcoin mining operation, including proprietary software, vendor relationships, and trade secrets, and of forming a rival firm called Proton Management. The lawsuit sought injunctions and damages, but was later dismissed in June 2026 after Swan conceded in a parallel UK case that it never owned the alleged mining assets or trade secrets.

Over the past six months, Swan has advanced three major directions around “real Bitcoin.” In June, it launched RBX (Real Bitcoin Exchange), a structured way for ETF holders to convert into real on-chain Bitcoin while seeking tax-efficient treatment . In July, it launched “50 Days for Freedom,” cutting buy fees from 1% to 0.5% and emphasizing free withdrawals and self-custody . In August, it officially launched Swan Sovereign: clients hold 100% of their private keys while Swan provides ongoing education and a dedicated advisor for $25/month; reportedly around 1,300–1,400 clients have joined since May .

The future focus is Swan Trinity: clients hold no keys, with three keys split across Swan, BitGo, and a UK institution, expected in Q4 to eliminate single points of failure . RBX and Sovereign are positioned as the full path from ETFs to real Bitcoin and then to self-custody.
