About Sorare
Sorare is a fantasy football game built on blockchain technology. Players collect officially licensed digital player cards, which are NFTs, and build 5-card lineups that earn points based on real-life match performances tracked by Opta data. Cards come in five rarity tiers (Common, Limited, Rare, Super Rare, Unique), with higher tiers offering greater score multipliers and tradability on secondary markets. The platform covers football (with licenses for the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, etc.), NBA, and MLB, and migrated its NFT infrastructure to Solana in late 2025.
Its core value proposition is true digital ownership: unlike traditional fantasy sports where lineups are just entries, Sorare cards are verifiable blockchain assets that players can hold, trade, or sell. This addresses the pain point of players investing time and money into fantasy games without accumulating any lasting asset value. The game also differentiates itself by claiming skill-based gameplay—selecting the right players based on form, fixtures, and tactics—rather than chance.
Over the past six months (March to September 2026), Sorare has faced significant regulatory headwinds in the UK. The Gambling Commission has charged Sorare with offering unlicensed gambling under the Gambling Act 2005, with trial scheduled for June 2027. In January 2025, the National Crime Agency obtained a freezing order on £10,024,041.33 held in the Premier League's Barclays account, relating to Sorare's licensing payment, though the Premier League itself was not accused of wrongdoing. Separately, the FCA warned 13 Premier League clubs about 18 unauthorized crypto sponsorship arrangements. In France, Sorare has not yet formally registered under the new JONUM framework for monetizable digital object games, which launched in February 2026. The company maintains its position that the game is skill-based, not gambling, and continues to operate globally with over 3 million registered users.
Sorare was founded in Paris in 2018 by Nicolas Julia and Adrien Montfort as a fantasy football game on Ethereum, where players build teams using NFT cards and score points based on real player performances.
In September 2021, Sorare completed a $680 million Series B round led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, valuing it at $4.3 billion, one of the largest funding rounds in Europe at the time, with participation from several star footballers.
That same year, to address gas fees, Sorare migrated from Ethereum mainnet to StarkNet layer-2, improving transaction speed and sustainability, laying the groundwork for large-scale user growth.
In 2023, Sorare signed a four-year exclusive licensing deal with the English Premier League, reportedly worth £30 million per year, granting rights to sell digital cards for all 20 clubs, strengthening its position in football IP.
In September 2024, the UK Gambling Commission charged Sorare with providing unlicensed gambling facilities, violating the Gambling Act 2005, with a court hearing scheduled for October. Sorare denied the charges, stating its platform does not constitute gambling. This case marks the first regulatory action by UK authorities against a blockchain platform, carrying significant implications for NFT fantasy sports compliance.
