About Sommelier

Sommelier is a Cosmos SDK application chain that supplies strategy execution and risk control for actively managed vaults on Ethereum. Strategists run models off-chain and submit rebalance instructions, which must pass consensus among the validator set before a message bridge delivers them to the vault contract; validators can only move assets into the positions encoded in the contract, and users remain the only party able to withdraw. Only rebalance parameters cross the bridge, never the assets.

Vaults connect to Aave, Compound and Uniswap through adapters, so one strategy can combine lending and market making, while governance approves strategies and contract onboarding. Clients are DAO treasuries, stablecoin issuers and front-end teams packaging strategies as products; unlike yield aggregators, rebalances are backed by validator consensus rather than a multisig or a single strategist.

Updated: Oct 30, 2026

Sommelier launched its mainnet on Cosmos SDK in 2022, introducing a non-custodial, validator-governed vault protocol with a proprietary bridge to Ethereum. This established the foundation for off-chain computation and private strategy execution.

In February 2024, the v7 upgrade integrated Axelar's general message passing, enabling multichain deployments beyond Ethereum while avoiding asset bridging. This marked a strategic shift toward alt-EVM networks and expanded the protocol's design space.

Later in 2024, Sommelier deployed its first Arbitrum vault, Real Yield ETH, which leveraged leveraged staking and concentrated liquidity on Uniswap V3. This demonstrated the protocol's ability to adapt strategies across different execution environments and marked its entry into the L2 ecosystem.

These milestones collectively define Sommelier's evolution from a single-chain vault protocol to a multichain asset management layer, with its architecture emphasizing off-chain intelligence, validator governance, and bridge-free interoperability.

Updated: Sep 1, 2026

Through 2026 Sommelier operated under the Somm brand, with Cellar vaults still rebalanced on Ethereum by a validator set following strategist rules and Real Yield USD rotating USDC, USDT and DAI across Aave, Compound and Uniswap V3. The protocol has shrunk far from its 2023 peak: DefiLlama data show gross protocol revenue of about $3,580 in the second quarter of 2026, split roughly evenly between management and performance fees.

SOMM's market capitalisation fell to the low hundreds of thousands of dollars, with trading concentrated on Osmosis and other decentralised venues. The team disclosed no new funding or major upgrade during 2026 and governance activity slowed noticeably.

Sommelier's Future strategy and roadmap: Somm will open its execution layer to third-party front ends and curators, use lower fees and clearer risk disclosure to attract new strategies, and prioritise exit liquidity and validator incentives to keep existing vaults viable.
